Per-oral Cholangioscopy

Peroral cholangioscopy is a type of cholangioscopy, that is a minimally invasive advanced endoscopic procedure that allows for real-time definition visualization of the biliary tree.



A small catheter that has a high-resolution fiber optic probe is inserted through the endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography scope.




There is an additional port through which accessories can be passed for interventional procedures. The entire architecture through which bile flows can be checked for a variety of problems.



Indications of per-oral cholangioscopy

Diagnostic —

  1. Gallstone disease
  2. Biliary tree strictures
  3. Staging of bile duct cancer

Therapeutic —

  1. Ablation therapy for bile duct cancer
  2. Cannulation for strictures
  3. Migrated stent extraction
  4. Lithotripsy for gallstone disease

Advantages of per-oral cholangioscopy over surgery —

  1. Minimally invasive procedure
  2. Lesser duration of stay in the hospital
  3. Fewer or nil complications
