What is Acute liver failure?

Acute liver failure 

Acute liver failure is characterized by serious rapid onset deterioration of the liver.

 It is diagnosed via a combination of clinical features and laboratory investigations.


Common causes


1. Viral hepatitis

2. Drug toxicity

3. Ischemic hepatitis

4. Acute fatty liver of pregnancy


 

Risk factors


Pre-existing liver disorders like

  1. Alcoholic hepatitis
  2. Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)
  3. Chronic viral hepatitis 

 

Clinical features of ALF


  1. Rapid onset jaundice (yellowness of eyes and skin)
  2. Right upper quadrant abdominal pain
  3. Anorexia
  4. Fatigue
  5. Distension of abdomen
  6. Malaise
  7. Sleepiness

 

Complications


  1. Hepatic encephalopathy
  2. Cerebral edema
  3. Renal failure
  4. Bleeding disorders
